When Sartell was first discovered by French fur traders, the area was known for its rapids which caused travelers difficulty as they were moving up the Mississippi River to St. Anthony Falls in Minneapolis. Since then, the town has made a name for itself due in large part to Sartell’s lucrative paper mill, stellar school system and active community life. Joseph B. Sartell, whom the town is named after, was one of the town’s first settlers in 1854. Building a lumber company with the help of his sons, Sartell possessed a sense of pride for his hard work; a mind set that was adopted by the town and is still evident today. In 1907, what is now known as the Champion International paper mill opened and is still the city’s largest employer. Though the town has advanced and the world is growing all around it, nothing can take away from Sartell’s community feel. Located in close proximity to bustling St. Cloud, Sartell is a perfectly quaint place to live and nurture a family thanks to its prominent school system, exceptional yet affordable housing and inclusive religious, local and professional organizations.
