History

Originally a waystation on Red River Trails between the Canadian boarder at Pembina and St. Paul, St. Cloud was developed from three settlements. These settlements were known as Upper Town, Middle Town, and Lower Town. Upper Town, Middle Town, and Lower Town were established in 1853, although St. Cloud did not become incorporated until 1856. Upper Town was plotted by General Sylvanus Lowry, who later went on to become St. Cloud’s first mayor.

St. Cloud received its name from John Wilson, a Maine native with French Huguenot ancestry. St. Cloud was named after the Paris suburb, Saint-Cloud. St. Cloud was once a docking station for steamboats, however river levels were not reliable. Granite quarries have operated in the St. Cloud area since the 1880s, giving St. Cloud its nickname, "The Granite City."
